The four-year collaboration agreement between the Ministry for Digitalisation and the SnT will contribute to and complement the work done to achieve the ministry’s objectives of interoperability, digital inclusion and GovTech solutions in the public sector.

Implementing digital identities

The first concrete collaborative research project to be realised as part of the agreement will focus on use cases for digital identities. The project entitled “Digital Identities for Luxembourg” will help further position Luxembourg as a digital forerunner and shape the implementation of digital identities in the European Union. It will analyse the implications of digital identities and digital wallets from a strategic and technical perspective to see how they can be used to create secure identities for citizens where personal data is effectively protected. Trusted technologies in this field could be revolutionary for public administration as well as for sectors such as healthcare and banking.

We are proud to help the Grand Duchy be at the forefront of European innovation in the development of digital identities.

Today, the state is entrusted with issuing physical identity documents. “In the transition to completely digital processes, the state should also take the responsibility of implementing reliable and secure solutions that make it possible to conduct procedures and transactions online,” says Marc Hansen, Minister Delegate for Digitalisation.

European digital identity wallet

The project takes place in the context of the European Commission’s initiative for a European digital identity wallet. Its objective is to support the government in its implementation.

“Inefficient management and exchange of personal data reduces competitiveness and complicates regulatory compliance,” comments SnT Director Björn Ottersten. “This is estimated to block approximately 3% of Luxembourg’s GDP. We are proud to help the Grand Duchy unlock this potential and be at the forefront of European innovation in the development of digital identities.”
